The Pediatric Traveler Traveling
with children presents unique challenges, especially when planning a
lengthy trip abroad. Although
many of the myths about the effects of distant travel on children have
been dispelled, practical precautions should still be taken.
Knowing what to expect and what to avoid is the key to a
successful trip. There
may be a greater risk of being exposed to contagious childhood diseases
outside the U.S. It is
important to keep childhood immunizations up to date.
However, specialized travel related vaccines may be required or
should be considered for personal health protection. In
addition, children may be less concerned with personal cleanliness, food
handling, and water sanitation than adults.
This makes them more likely to contract gastrointestinal diseases
such as traveler’s diarrhea. Children
may also be more interested in coming into contact with animals that may
be carrying ticks or fleas that can spread infection.
Diseases that are common to a particular geographical area, such
as malaria, also require that special precautions be taken to protect
children who are at a higher risk of exposure. Even
such things as jet lag, motion sickness, and the emotional adjustments
to travel for children can spoil the fun of traveling.
The more prepared you are, the more likely your travel experience will be a positive one for the entire family. We at Passport Health, are particularly sensitive to the needs of children while traveling. We provide a compassionate atmosphere where your children can receive the vaccines that they need to stay healthy. We also spend time educating you on the appropriate measures to take to insure your child’s health.
At
Passport Health, we don’t just vaccinate; we educate! |
